What are the options for external logos in various SIPRI publications?
What are the options for external logos in various SIPRI publications?
All funder visibility requirements should be transparently shared with Outreach (email Steph and Joey) before there is ink on any agreement (i.e. before or during, but not after, a grant has been pursued or a contract has been signed). We want to manage expectations and meet our obligations; we also want to avoid any awkward or truly problematic situations that may arise.
In all instances, the author is required to obtain and supply high-resolution files of grayscale (and if relevant, colour) logo files. They should also inform editors if there are visual profile guidelines on how the logos are used.
Here are the various options based on the publication:
Logos on the A4 circle series (Policy Briefs, Fact Sheets, Insights and Background Papers)
(a) If it’s a “text only” courtesy and acknowledgement, it goes at the bottom of the front page with an asterisk.
Example A Reassessment of the European Union’s Response to Climate-related Security Risks
(b) If a logo is involved (alone or with acknowledgement of some kind), it all goes on the back. No asterisk.
(c) The logo can appear on the front if it’s a “co-publication” i.e. when the funder has also been involved in content development (e.g. providing research inputs, is a co-author, etc.). To do this, the design requires removing the circles from the upper right corner and adding a special “institutional co-publication notice” under the author(s) name.
Logos on publications with covers and title pages (Policy Papers, A4 and S5 reports)
For co-pubs, (b) and (c) below may also apply.
Example Limits on Autonomy in Weapon Systems: Identifying Practical Elements of Human Control
(b) A logo can appear on the title page for a funder, who is not a co-publisher.
Example Towards Legitimate Stability in CAR and the DRC: External Assumptions and Local Perspectives
(c) If the funder, who is not a co-publisher, finds option (b) insufficient, the logo can also appear on the back cover. If necessary, the logo can appear on both the title page and the back cover.
Example New Technologies and Nuclear Disarmament: Outlining a Way Forward
Logos on graphics, press releases, films, websites and other
In general external logos do not appear on press releases, films and other SIPRI created materials. In the event that this level of funder visibility is expected or required, special agreements and arrangements will need to be made. This should be negotiated and agreed in-house before any promises are made.
How do SIPRI acknowledgements work?
How do SIPRI acknowledgements work?
In the A4 circle series, a text-only acknowledgement of the funder (either courtesy or required) may appear at the bottom of the front page. No others are acknowledged. If external logos are to be used, see FAQ on logos.
Example A Reassessment of the European Union’s Response to Climate-related Security Risks
In all instances, acknowledgements should not name paid peer review/external referees.
Avoid mentioning in any form that “the errors are the responsibility of the author”.
